Seniors Clean Pleasant Hill Park

by Lindsey Rouse

April 07, 2009

Each year the senior class takes a hobo day two times a year. Hobo day is a day where the senior’s find someone they can work for. The person pays them fifty dollars each. This is a great fundraiser for their senior trip. While the senior class is on hobo day the freshman through juniors are at the school testing; prepping for ACT’s and other tests. Since the senior’s do not have test to take anymore they do not have anything to do those days, so that is how hobo day began. The testing takes four days total, two in the fall and two in the spring. The seniors do one fall hobo day and one spring hobo day. In the years past the other two days, the seniors just got off of school or helped out teachers at the grade school level, not this year.

The class of 2009 seniors and their sponsors decided that a day off was a total waste. Instead, they were going to put that day to use and do some community service. Last fall the senior class cleaned up the Crescent Heights Cemetery in Pleasant hill on October 31, 2009. The cleaning consisted of mowing, weed eating, picking up trash, and cleaning off the tomb stones. This was a great turn out for the class and community, so when spring came around they decided to help again.

I am one of those seniors in this class. I feel that this was a great thing to do. Our class loved cleaning the park and cemetery. It helped us become closer as a class while we worked together. I think that this helps the students be less selfish and care for others, and at the same time help out our community. I could speak for my whole class by saying that it was a fun job and everyone enjoyed the feeling of helping someone out. Community service is great for anyone and I encourage everyone to at least try it once.

When you live in a small community like Pleasant Hill, you have to be there for your town and help out or else after a few years there will not be a town. I hope that every class after mine will make this a tradition. It is good for the students and the community and I think that everyone can benefit from it.
