Wolves drop conference game to Greenfield

Wolves still looking to share WIVC South Division title

by Leah Wilke

October 04, 2009

The Wolves lost to Greenfield Friday night, Oct. 2 in what would have been their WIVC South championship game. It was a rough night for the Wolves who found themselves trailing the Tigers 14-0 at half. The Tigers and the Wolves battled back and forth the first quarter with neither team giving up any points on the scoreboard. The second quarter proved to be the deal-breaker for the Wolves as the Tiger offense struck twice, first by ground, second by air.

The first score was on a one yard TD run by Sexton; however, the Wolves defense held the Tigers and shut down the conversion attempt by Bishop. The second scoring rally came on a 30 yard endzone pass from Bishop to Buhl, that appeared to be a miscommunication with the Wolves defense, as Buhl was open for an easy snare in the end zone.

After a stern pep talk from Coach Edwards, the Wolves defense stepped up and held the Tigers the second half and did not allow them to score at all! The Wolves offense struggled as the third quarter saw junior Brian Black leave the game in an ambulance with what appeared to be a dislocated elbow and a possible hairline fracture in his radius.

In the fourth quarter, the Wolves were determined to make a run for it. Wolves quarterback Dylan McKinnon connected with his bread-n-butter, Evan Borrowman, in the end zone with a 28 yard pass. Cody Clendenny’s extra-point was blocked and this would be the only scoring for the Wolves or the Tigers for the rest of the night.

Some of the highlights of the night included a hit by Noah Gregurich near the Greenfield sidelines. If there had been a camera crew anywhere around, he would have likely made the Legion of Pain on this particular night! The sound of pads connecting could be heard very clearly across the field well into Wolves fan territory! Gregurich also had a good defensive game making some key tackles throughout the night.

Big #74, Cole Ruble, was also a force on the defensive end as he was usually found at the bottom of the dog pile when the referees had to sort through bodies to find the ball! Without this win, the Wolves will have to depend on other teams winning or losing their games to determine the outcome of the WIVC South Division title, as far as the IHSA WIVC representation is concerned. With the current records across the WIVC, it is evident that the Wolves will share the WIVC south division title, the only thing that is still up in the air, is who they will share that title with. The Wolves play Carrollton this Friday at home at 7:30 p.m.
