New Physical Education Class

Advanced P.E.

By Riddle, Christy

January 10, 2012

A new physical education class will be added to the curriculum starting second semester.  The class will be held 8th hour and will be called Advanced P.E.  The purpose of the class it to give kids the chance to become more physically fit, prevent injuries, and to spark interest in all athletic programs.  In the class, students will focus on flexibility, agility, cardiovascular, and strength.  Some of the exercises students will perform are movement based flexibility drills, plyometric exercises, running, jump rope, and lifting weights.  Also, students, will learn proper techniques, spotting procedures, and proper nutrition.  Each of these areas will also be tested with a physical test and a written test throughout the semester.

The class is more than just lifting weights.  It is a class to get students more physically fit by measuring improvement throughout.  A weight lifting unit has traditionally been held during regular P.E. classes.  However, it isn't long enough to show large gains in physical fitness.  P.E. classes at Pleasant Hill have traditionally been a combination of team, lifetime, and racket sports along with weight lifting.  This class will give more students the ability to work on physical fitness and to spark interest in team sports as this has become an issue at P.H.H.S.  Currently, weight training is limited to those in athletics.  This class will offer all students the option of learning how to become more physically fit through weight training, drills, and exercises.

The class will be limited to 20 students due to safety concerns in the classroom and to also not take students away from other elective programs in the high school.  8th hour has been reserved for elective classes as during the spring semester, athletes have to many times miss class or part of a class to attend softball or baseball games or track meets.  Therefore, it is the hour that was also picked for Advanced P.E. for the inaugural class.  Students interested in taking the class should talk to Mr. Lowe about the criteria for the class.
