April 08, 2009
The PHHS FACS Club is planning an action packed trip to St. Louis on Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25. The group will be venturing to St. Louis Friday morning where they will visit the renown "Hill" area of St. Louis where they will a walking tour of this famous Italian district. Would you believe that one short block of Elizabeth Avenue on the Hill produced three members of the Baseball Hall of Fame? The block, recently renamed Hall of Fame Place, was the boyhood home of Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola, and the street where broadcast legend Jack Buck bought the first home for his new and growing family. Today, three granite plaques mark the location of each home as well as when their most famous residents were inducted into the Hall of Fame.Lunch will be at Rigazzi's on "The Hill". (Student is responsible for his or her own lunch.)
They will then check into their hotel, The Hampton Inn, (which will be paid for with FACS Club funds). Students will then travel to the downtown area to visit Lacleades Landing and the St. Louis Arch. Admission to ride to the top of the arch is $5 for students 15 years of age and under and $10 for students 16 and older. We will eat supper on the Landing, student's choice, then head to the Cardinal/Cubs game.
On Saturday, students can enjoy free continental breakfast provided by the hotel. Check out time will be at 10 a.m. We will then be heading to Soulard Market to tour the market and see the large selection of vendors at the marketplace. They have fresh produce along with replica designer sunglasses and handbags, jewelry, t-shirts, etc. Usually Saturday hosts the largest amount of vendors.
We will then head to St. Louis Union Station, once the largest and busiest passenger rail terminal in the world, is now one of America's great marketplaces. Union Station first opened in 1894, but ceased operation as an active train terminal in 1978. Union Station reopened in August of 1985 as the largest adaptive re-use project in the United States.
Today, this 114 year old National Historic Landmark of unmatched beauty and elegance has been dramatically restored and redeveloped as a dynamic mixed-use project that includes great shopping, delicious dining and fabulous entertainment.
St. Louis Union Station houses a 539 room Marriott Hotel, luxury offices, a lake and a plaza for festivals, concerts and other special events. The century-old St. Louis Union Station boasts a unique and colorful history as well as a bright future. St. Louis Union Station is truly a shopper's delight with over 80 shops and restaurants to choose from. An important part of the Station's special appeal is the variety of unique retail shops, offering everything from fine fashions to one-of-a-kind gifts. There is a free museum on the second-level of Union Station. “O” Gauge model trains, railroad china and silverware, uniforms, timetables, a working model railroad and other artifacts and memorabilia from St. Louis Union Station’s glory days as a major rail hub are exhibited in the museum, along with a video theatre that showcases the restoration of St. Louis Union Station and films of “The Harvey Girls” and “Meet Me in St. Louis”.
